Cycling to New Zealand March 2017- September 2018 at least

Hi everyone,
I am planning to cycle from Moray Scotland To New Zealand over the next couple of years. I leave home on March 16th, catch the Newcastle -Amsterdam ferry on 23rd. My plan so far is to cycle to Bremen then across to Prague and Vienna and then into Slovenia. After that I will find the best route across to Turkey, then Armenia, Iran, Turkmenistan, the 'Stans to Kashi China and then south - weather dependent towards Singapore.

But I am very flexible as to my itinerary once I reach China. I would love to learn a little Chinese on the way! Also, the date in September 2018 is when my medical insurance runs out because of my age. I will be 70 next year! I am happy to link up with people on the way and I see that there are other people going around the same time. I
have not done anything quite so dramatic as this before but I am pretty fit and can manage 80km a day with 3 or 4 days off every 10 days. I am also in no particular hurry but would like to reach China before winter sets in. I am generally vegetarian, but do eat meat sometimes as well.

I am very happy to link up with people if our paths cross.

Hi David, I'm planning on

Hi David, I'm planning on cycling from Georgia to China from mid-May 2017 - not sure if that means we might overlap? Good to keep in touch perhaps just in case!

Cycling to China

Hi Josephine,
Looks like I will be following behind you. If I can't cycle through Iran then I would expect to be going through Georgia about 6 weeks after you and aim to reach Kashgar by mid October at the latest.
Yes. let's keep in touch! Bon voyage!

Hi David

Hi David
your trip sounds ace!
I'm from the UK, living in the French Alps at the moment working as a chalet host. Going to Belgium for a festival in a few weeks.
I plan to make a similar trip
Brussels to taize in France for holy week
To Italy possibly a train through the alps. Following the Via Francigena
Ferry to Greece
Volunteer with refugees and possibly work there for the summer
To turkey via some islands, ephesus and up to Istanbul
Ferry to Georgia
Then either Armenia Iran boat to india possible stop to see a friend in dubai
or Azerbaijan ferry Turkmenistan silk road countries China

Problem - don't think uk citizens can get an independent travel visa for iran
Don't think you can travel independently China to india because they require group bookings with travel agents for Tibet

maybe our paths will cross? I will be slower than you at the start! will keep in touch ! Bon voyage

Keeping in contact

Hi Cathy,
Sorry not to have replied earlier but have only just seen your message.
I have just got my 2 year visa for China and as I had to have a plane ticket to get it I am off to Beijing on March 1st for a week before coming back and starting cycling on the 16th.
Also, I did have a contact at an agency in Iran who said they could get me a visa but they have not answered my latest email so I am now not so sure. If not I will cycle to Tbilisi and Baku and cross the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan. I would like to be in Kashgar in October before cycling down to Laos.
Your itinerary looks pretty impressive too!
I am happy to share any experiences I may have on the journey too that I might help you if you are following on behind. Also you might be interested in a blog by a Swedish cyclist called Frederika Ek (The Bike Ramble) who has followed a similar path but is on a round the world trip. Good luck and keep in contact

Once I reach NZ!

Hi Albert,
Thanks for your kind invitation. I will certainly get in contact when I know my arrival time in NZ. At the moment it seems a long way off!
I am busy packing and unpacking, trying to take only the most essential things and I am beginning to get excited. But I still have a week in Beijing in front of me to be a tourist and get a feel of China before I cycle back there at the end of the year. I read a little of your China blog too.
All the best David

Connecting later

Thanks John. I am writing this from Beijing where I am spending one week before starting the cycle journey. I am here because of the need for a visa later on. I look forward to meeting up with you when I eventually get to NZ.

Appreciations for your support. I have just completed my first 7 days cycling and am in Newcastle after 320 miles and ready to take the ferry to Amsterdam tomorrow.
I hope Spring arrives soon! It was a freezing journey down south from Findhorn!

Easy travel in Iran

Thanks Amir.
I have just finished the first 1500km and am just about to leave Germany and go into the Czech Republic. It is still some time way but if I get my visa I will be in your area around mid to late July. I will certainly get in contact then.

Arriving in Turkey tomorrow

Hi everyone,
After nearly three months travelling and lots of support from Warmshowers hosts I will enter Turkey tomorrow and spend my first night in Kirklareli. I plan to be in Istanbul on June 9th and will spend 6 days at least there before continuing my journey into Asia and cross Turkey along the Black Sea coast to Georgia and Azerbaijan. Unfortunately I am not allowed to travel independently in Iran as I am British so have had to give up that idea.
If there is anyone planning to do something similar I am happy to link up but I also want to ask if there is anyone in Istanbul who reads this who might be able to help me out with a bit of orientation in the city while I am there. I have already booked a hotel there.
Many thanks for reading this

I will be very interested to see if anything comes of this post!

All the best

David
